What Is Peace?

Readers who live in hip neighborhoods might be familiar with ‘peace’ flags. Either a series of Tibetan Buddhist prayer flags or a US Flag with the States’ stars replaced with a peace symbol, these flags are meant to demonstrate the home owner’s commitment to peace. Unfortunately, this vision of peace is incompatible with owning a home, and the flags betray a misunderstanding of peace more profound than most peace flaggers can understand.

The natural state of mankind is aggression, theft, war, and rule by force alone. Only a superior force prevents anarchy. Most often what passes for peace is enforced by the top thug for his sole benefit. The local crime lord, Kings, and the Pax Romana are all examples of relative peace secured to benefit the ruling power. The US was a unique experiment where the ruling force is a set of laws, the Constitution. While abuses are ever present, even the highest government figures remain servants to their Constitutions.

Regardless of the form of government, all peace relies on force. The result of defiance of authority is a show of force. If the peace flagger on the block refuses to mow his lawn, the City will issue a ticket. If he still refuses, the City will mow the lawn for him and send him a bill. If he refuses to pay the bill, he will ultimately lose his house. If he refuses to leave his house, he will be arrested. If he resists arrest, he will be subdued. If he fights back, he may be shot. More commonly, if the peace flagger’s house is invaded by robbers who desire his property, the police might subdue and arrest the robbers. Hidden behind all private property and civil behavior is the threat of force to keep the peace.

The only barrier to the peace flagger losing his home to thieves is force, not his personal beliefs. The best system of peace is the one pioneered by the US Constitution, whereby no single person can become king, or thug-in-chief. At least in principal, the highest authority in the US serves the common good and does not benefit a single person or special interest group. No coincidence, then, that the US and the nations that have emulated it are the most peaceful. The imbecilic Kony protesters are fighting a man when they should be fighting a system that invests the responsibility for peace in a warlord.

Those who understand what peace means and requires should display a standard US Flag, or maybe drape copies of the US Constitution across their front porches. No human system yet devised has done a better job of maintaining peace.

Yes, They Are Communists II

I have here in my hand a list of 205 . . . a list of names that were made known to the Secretary of State as being members of the Communist Party and who nevertheless are still working and shaping policy in the State Department. – Sen. Joseph McCarthy, February 9, 1950

There’s about 78 to 81 members of the Democratic Party that are members of the Communist Party. – Rep. Allen West, April 10, 2012

Rep. West touched on the Left’s favorite live wire, McCarthyism. Of course West has a long history of pushing the Left’s buttons to gain attention and raise campaign funds, but apart from syntax, his comments are valid and worth consideration. But first, a bit of history on McCarthyism.

Sen. McCarthy did not invent McCarthyism; that falls to House Democrats. From the beginning of progressivism through the end of WWII, House Democrats convened a series of committees aimed at thwarting communist influence and infiltration in the Federal Government and the media. Indeed, these House committees continued, under Democrat control, through the Carter Administration. Hollywood Blackballing, communist baiting, and show trials are all Democrat institutions. The Left enjoys blaming Republicans McCarthy and Pres. Nixon for anti-communist excesses, much as they pretend that slavery and Jim Crow were not exclusively Democrat Party institutions. By pretending that their own failings were really the Republicans, they whitewash history, which explains their excruciating sensitivity to anything communist.

The Left likes to vilify red-baiters not because the allegations were false, but because they were very true. Paul Kengor’s Dupes is a must read for anyone who might trivialize the communist threat and its ties to the US Left. Soviet records unsealed in the 1990s demonstrate an elaborate network of communist agents and secret Communist Party members embedded at the highest levels of the Federal Government and in media. The Communist Party USA was, indeed, illegally funded by the Soviets, and the CPUSA did take direct secret orders from Moscow. The ugly history of US communism and its impact on Democrat politics can only be rebutted by vainly trivializing the threat. McCarthy’s list of communists may have been a fiction, but he was right all along, albeit without much proof.

Most likely West was referring to the Congressional Progressive Caucus whose members represent the most extreme left elements in Washington and number about his tally of Communists. The CPUSA is largely defunct, now that the Soviets no longer pay their bills, and none of the CPC members are actual members of the CPUSA anyway. In that sense, West was wrong, but his error was only semantic. Since the dawn of progressivism (itself a euphemism for socialism), obvious anti-capitalists like Woody Guthrie or John Dewey defended themselves by stating that they were not Communists in the CPUSA sense. At most, they would self-identify as ‘fellow travelers’ with the Communists. The defense that someone who believes in Marxism and is fully anti-capitalist is not a communist only because he never officially joined the CPUSA is a hollow shell.

Such is the criticism of West’s comments. Yes, nobody from the CPC is a member of the CPUSA, but so what? CPC members such as Reps. Maxine Waters, John Lewis, Pete Stark, Ed Markey, John Conyers, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Sen. Bernie Sanders hold the same values as any hardened communist. They despise capitalism, seek complete government control of the mechanisms of wealth creation, and routinely employ class warfare tactics. Former CPC members such as Reps. Alan Grayson, Cynthia McKinney, and Nancy Pelosi further demonstrate the extreme leftist agitprop rhetoric of this body.

The members of the CPC act like communists, talk like communists, agitate the classes like communists, and want to restructure the US into a socialist state. Even if West was wrong on the semantics of an upper vs. a lower case ‘C,’ the point remains that the agenda of communism lives on, whether under the banner of progressivism, or just making “the rich” pay a “fair share.” ‘Communist’ is a fair word to describe anyone who wants to dismantle capitalism and impose a new order of government mandated wealth distribution. The fact that communists are offended by being called communists should not concern capitalists desperately defending the US’s exceptional history of individualism and prosperity.

NSA To Improve Cell Phone Performance

April 1, 2012
Bluffdale, UT (AP)

In welcome news to the nation’s cell phone users, the National Security Agency has announced that it will reduce dropped calls by up to 25%. Through the construction of NSA’s new Bluffdale, Utah data center, a common cause of dropped calls will soon be eliminated. “We are pleased to be able to improve the day to day lives of Americans,” said NSA spokesman Ken White. Cell phone users can expect to see improvements in dropped calls by mid-2013.

“As everyone knows, cell phones are not protected by privacy laws,” said White. “For the past ten years, the NSA has been monitoring most cell phone conversations to identify terrorist and other threats to national security.” NSA technicians recently discovered that their surveillance technology would sometimes drop a call as a phone travelled from one radio tower’s region to another. “Basically, driving too fast from one tower to the next confused the monitoring technology, so the call was simply dropped.”

To solve this problem, the NSA is building a new data center that has the ability to buffer, or store, huge amounts of phone and internet data for later analysis. The $2 billion building is nearly 23 acres in size and is expected to employ thousands of Utahans, known for being polyglots. Overall, the NSA’s budget, employee headcount, and most operations are classified.

Local residents are welcoming the change to their community. Rancher and long-time political activist Terry Buckholder said “when the NSA came to buy my ranch land, I was thrilled. They paid me a very attractive price.” Bluffdale mayor Derk Timothy also supports the project. “We welcome the economic growth the new NSA data center will bring our community. We fully expect the NSA to be a good neighbor and a partner in our future.”

There has been some concern from civil liberties proponents. In a recent Wired Magazine article, a former NSA official expressed his concern that the NSA’s activities are too intrusive and violate a citizen’s right to privacy. The American Civil Liberties Union also has some concerns. Spokeswoman Rita Sklar said “this technology is very powerful and could be used to spy on ordinary Americans. In the hands of a Republican administration, that would concern us greatly.”

Still, most people are excited to learn that they will suffer fewer dropped calls. Said Beth Ruby, Des Moines: “Whatever the government can do to improve my cell phone performance and reduce dropped calls, I support.” Rod Rennick of Dallas, TX had similar sentiments. “I see it like the airport TSA. Anything the government can do to improve my safety, even a little, is worth the inconvenience and intrusion to me. Also, I am really looking forward to fewer dropped calls,” said the father of two.
