Global Warming Requires Diplomacy and Vision

DDT, Silicone Breast Implants, Alar, Dietary Salt, Radon, Asbestos, Drinking Water Arsenic, Irradiated Food, and Cell Phone Radiation are all examples of irresponsible scares foisted on the public by self proclaimed scientists and government experts. The innumerable studies showing something is either bad or good, only later to be repudiated, attest to the fact that nearly everything science claims to know is, in some way, fundamentally flawed. Even Newton’s laws of planetary motion were proven by Einstein to be flawed. Still, many people cling to science like a religion, and that religion’s latest scare is global warming.

Global warming is responsible for the Greenland Ice Sheet melting, the Antarctic glaciers expanding, increased hurricane activity, reduced hurricane activity, hot spells, cold spells, floods, droughts, future wars, famine, rising sea levels, and any number of tragedies tangentially related to the weather. Never mind that global climate has always changed and these dire predictions mostly exist only in untested computer models. The global warming religion dictates that human industrial activity is causing all these troubles, even though there are many data points in recent pre-industrial history of warmer weather, and global temperatures are actually falling recently. Never mind that the archeological record shows that CO2 levels rise after a temperature increase, not before. For the purposes of this report, let’s set aside the many reasonable doubts about the new religion – let’s agree that humans are causing global warming and it must be stopped.

The great heroes of global warming are Al Gore and the Democrats. Bill Clinton even went so far as to claim Hurricane Katrina was caused by Republicans. What have these heroes done so far to address the greatest threat to humanity? They have pushed technologies like wind power, solar panels, and corn ethanol. A wind power lobby self reports that wind power accounts for 1.5% of global electricity generation, while solar is very close to zero. Corn ethanol, at best, consumes as much fossil fuel as it replaces, and is probably a net generator of greenhouse gases. So, for all the hype and threats to reorganize global economies, new green technologies account for about 1.5% of electric production.

What have Republicans done about global warming? Much, much more. One of the interesting aspects of greenhouse gases is that they are a global issue. Burning coal in China is the same as burning coal in Pennsylvania. Likewise, building a nuclear reactor in Dubai is just as good as building one in Illinois. But how can the world safely allow the construction of nuclear plants in potentially unstable regions? In one of Pres. Bush’s unheralded diplomatic triumphs, he created an international coalition dedicated to providing nuclear fuel and plant construction knowhow to countries willing to forego their own uranium enrichment. Iran could have opted to purchase reactor grade uranium for peaceful purposes rather than inflame international tensions with their own centrifuges, which only further exposes their aggressive intentions.

Just prior to the end of his term, Bush signed a treaty with the UAE to build peaceful reactors to provide electricity to their people with no greenhouse gas emissions. Once complete, the project will generate .15% of the world’s electricity. In other words, just ten deals on the scale of the UAE project will equal the entire “renewable” electricity output from 2008. Other countries, like the Czech Republic, have signed on to this program, making the peaceful expansion of nuclear power the most viable green technology. Indeed, because of the unreliable nature of wind, nuclear power already provides more electricity than can ever reasonably come from wind turbines.

Through the use of diplomacy and international cooperation, Bush has combated global warming, enhanced peace and security, and improved the futures of the world’s peoples. Who would have ever thought? Certainly not Al Gore, who has hitched his wagon to economy killers like carbon taxes and “renewable” sources costing up to five times more than nuclear. So, the next time Greenpeace approaches you for a donation to fight global warming, tell them George Bush has already done more than they even hope to achieve.
